1 SYLLABUS SMC CONTINUING EDUCATION Fall 2015 CONTEMPORARY FIGURE PAINTING Instructor Jessica Minckley jessicaminckley@gmail.com CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION: This contemporary figure (oil or acrylic) painting course uses photographs of the figure as subject and inspiration. Finding poetic focus and essence of the pose as well as painting and design basics will be addressed. Students also explore the fundamentals portrait painting and color theory with reference to art history. Life drawing experience is useful but not required. The way this class differs from your typical basic class is that the student is encouraged to develop their own voice through a sustained, individualized studio practice. GOALS & OBJECTIVES 1. Recognize and employ various painting concepts, techniques and theories derived from observation, lecture/demonstration, history and most importantly personal studio experience. 2. Develop knowledge and skills in relation to the use, application, effects/affects of painting media. 3. Develop a working knowledge of basic color theory, use of light and volume building. 4. Develop an analytical awareness of the various critical processes and position pertaining to the appreciative and aesthetic problems of being both an artist and observer. 5. Develop a personal direction with regards to materials, expression, imagery and content. COURSE CONTENT AND SCOPE This course is designed to give you a fundamental understanding of compositions. The first class will focus on materials, planning and techniques to be used in the class. We will be exploring alla prima and direct painting approaches, paint construction, collage/assemblage. The paintings will focus on figure/figurative, image/composition, paint structure and manipulation, and image development through the use of basic painting materials, techniques, color and value. Studio assignments involve preparatory studies, and when appropriate in-progress critiques. 2 STUDIO PROJECTS 1. Value Composition Study, Multiple Figure/Ground/Space Do a vine charcoal, composition on a 16" x 20" board or canvas. Paint with Titanium White , Ivory Black and a value scale grays an organized ground figure spatial study. 2. Alla Prima Monchromatic Mixed Media Life Painting Using collage papers of one hue, create a blocked composition at home before class. In class paint a monochromatic figure on top of the collage. This is an observational alla prima (or wet-on-wet) painting using a limited palette of one hue with ivory black and titanium white- achieving variations in value and intensity to describe form, space and quality of light. 3. Limited Palette Life Painting: Using an old canvas, prepare it with texture in oil or acrylic. Paint an observational painting using a limited palette of three colors. 4. Head Study Tone canvas with Cadmium Red: a one-day study of the human head with a focus on turning form with value and color temperature. Use colors: Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Ivory Black and Titanium White to achieve contrast and value, saturation and color temperature. 5. Warm/Cool Color Life Painting Tone canvas with Cadmium Red: a one-day study of the human form with a focus on turning form with value and color temperature. Use colors: Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine blue, Viridian, Ivory Black and Titanium White to achieve warm/cool contrast and value, saturation and color temperature. 6. Figure in Space Composition. Bring a prepared canvas. Create a sustained observational figure painting integrating various painting techniques and concepts, such as hue, value saturation, color temperature, color harmonies, paint handling, and color mixing along with composition, proportion and scale. Lectures and class discussions will provide an introduction to basic color theory. 3 SUPPLY LIST Recommended Books (optional) 1. MEDIUM: Oil painters: Stand Oil or Refined Linseed Oil (Liquin Optional) Acrylic painters: Matte Medium 8. PALETTE: Disposable palette paper, wax paper, or a piece of glass (oil painters) Acrylic painters: I will show you how to make a Stay-Wet Palette 9. PAPER TOWELS !!!! 10. METAL CANS or Pickle Jars or Yogurt cups: You will need several small containers for various solvents and mediums. Large plastic cup for water-based painters 11. CLEANERS: Brush cleaner (Although there are a variety of products designed for cleaning your hands and brushes, A regular bar of soap will do a fine job. Dish soap from the dollar store is excellent.
