   Definition: An attempt; exercise in 
   composition
   Dictionary: It is a literary composition usually 
   in “prose”.
   Properly speaking it is “a written composition 
   giving expression to one’s own personal ideas 
   on some topic.”

     UNITY: 
     
      It is developing a single theme with a 
      definite purpose.
     
      Subject of the essay must be clear and kept 
      in view throughout the essay.
     
      Irrelevant material should not be added 
     
      The subject may be treated in a variety of 
      ways and from different point of views.
    Characteristics
    ORDER: 
    Essay should follow a certain order to come to 
      a definite conclusion.
    There should be not only unity of subject but 
      also unity of treatment.
    It should not consist of haphazard ideas.
    It is necessary to think out a line of thought 
      before starting to write.
    Characteristics
    BREVITY:
    Essay should not be too long.
    A normal college essay should limit about 300 
     to 500 words.
    As a rule we cannot restrict the length of an 
     essay .
    An essay should be a brief exercise concisely 
     expressed.
