COMMUNICATION IS A PROCESS Before planning or implementation of any program, understanding the communication is important. It is a process that seeks reduce uncertainty. In many organizations, it is uncertainty that often stunts the effectiveness of a program. This is why communication is so important. 2 Because communication is a process, it’s elements are forever changing, dynamic, and interacting. Thus, the relationship among it’s elements are seen as being: Ongoing Cyclic Ever-changing No beginning, no end Interdependent, yet Interrelated. 3 IT HAS FOUR FORMS: • INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION - communication with yourself • INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION - person-to-person communication • MASS COMMUNICATION - communication using the mass media • ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION - communication with an organization and among organizations 4 FNP directors and coordinators use all four forms. To attempt to understand communication as a process, we use models. COMMUNICATION MODELS Because models are representations or reality, it sometimes helps to use them to explain dynamic process. We use models to freeze reality, enabling us to closely look at the elements that make them up. 5 Berol's Model One of the most popular models of communication is David Berol's S-M-C-R model (1960) While his is linear model, he delineates between the actors in the process (S or source and R or receiver) and the elements between them (M or message and C or channel) In later years, he added fifth element: E or effect and built in feedback into his model. 6
