Please read the following information carefully to familiarize yourself with the expectations and requirements for this course. Class Materials • Calculator: Texas Instruments Nspire CX-CAS • Binder: 2” three-ring binder with pockets • Pencil Case: a three-hole punch case to go in the binder (to hold your calculator, pencils, and erasers) • Loose-leaf paper: with three-hole punch • Graph paper: with three hole punch or “mini plots” or “sticky notes graph pad” • An ample supply of pencils, few erasers, pen (any color other than black or blue), highlighter (any color) Course/Classroom Expectations • Be on time: if you are not in your seat when the bell rings, you are tardy • Be prepared: bring all your materials to class every day and have your homework done • Respect: Yourself, your classmates, your teacher • Take risks: participate, ask questions, make mistakes – this is how you will learn! • Electronics: NO electronics during class other than your calculator and your Chrome Book. Refer to the handbook for consequences for cell phone use during class. Absences and Make-Up Policy • When absent for a day or two, you will be expected to copy the class notes, read the section related to the material, and attempt the homework before meeting with me. It is your responsibility to follow the assignment chart. You should email me with any questions. • When absent for a long time, email me to make arrangements for making up missing work and assessments. Appropriate time will be given, but your responsibility is vital. • All assessments are expected to be made up in the Testing Center in a time manner consistent with your absence. You have as many days as you were absent before the assessment occurred. • If you are absent the day before the test, you are expected to take the test at its scheduled time. • If you are absent on the day of the test, you are expected to take the test on the day you come back. • If you know you will be absent, please see me or email me prior to the absence to discuss what you will miss and how/when you will make it up. • Unauthorized absences will be dealt with according to school policy. A missed assessment during an unauthorized absence will result in a zero on the assessment. Grading • Homework: will account for 10% of your progress grade. The homework grade will consist of randomly collecting some homework assignments per chapter as well as collecting the homework from the entire chapter on the day of the chapter test. • Assessments: will account for 90% of your progress grade. Assessments consist of: o Quizzes: given midway through some chapters. Quizzes are typically shorter and cover the basic material covered in homework and in class. o Tests: given at the end of each unit. Tests are typically longer and are intended for a full period. Tests will cover the basic material covered in homework and more advanced problem solving questions about the topics covered in class. o Any other graded assessment. This may occasionally include random homework checks, unannounced pop quizzes, collected group work, etc. o If you would like to go over an assessment individually, please set up a time to meet with me. • Semester Grade: your semester grade will be determined as 80% from the progress grade and 20% from the final exam. • Grading Scale: DHS letter grade scale applies. Rounding is at the teacher’s discretion and may only occur with the semester grades (never the quarter grades). Extra Help • I’m generally available for help before school (in X201) and during free periods (X201). I may also be available after school on some days. Please set up an appointment beforehand to ensure that I will be there. You may still come if you don’t have an appointment and I’ll be happy to help you if I’m there. • I’m always available by email. I will return your email as soon as possible (most often within 1 business day). • Take advantage of ARC during the time we cover AB topics (Q119, Mon-Thurs 7:15 am – 4:30 pm, Fri 7:15 am – 3:14 pm) Academic Honesty and Ethical Behavior Group work is important and we’ll be doing some of it, but it has its time and place. Never copy an assignment from anyone and be sure tests and quizzes are your own work. • Any student looking at someone else’s paper during a testing situation will receive a zero on that paper. Your counselor and parents will be notified of such incidents and it will be documented in your file. • Students should try to prevent others from copying their work by exercising caution during testing situations and not sharing their assignments with others. Let’s have a great year!
