Excel Unit: lesson 3 Fast Food Fun Learning Objective: 1) Demonstrate understanding of basic data entry and formatting in a spreadsheet. 2) Understand and demonstrate how to create a basic formula in Excel. In a spreadsheet, a formula is used to perform calculations. Formulas can range from basic mathematical equations (like 2+2=4) to complex engineering and statistical equations. When creating/typing a formula in a spreadsheet, you must click on the active cell and then use an equals sign ( = ) before you type the math equation. For example: =2+2 Basic formulas involve entering, in the correct order, the data to be used in the calculations and the mathematical operators that tell the program which operation to perform. For example, if you have multiple calculations in one cell, you should use parenthesis ( ) to show the order of operations: Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally -- Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction You can also find a “shortcut” if you are doing basic math equations as well. Look on your home tab on your toolbar under the Editing ribbon. You should see a Greek symbol that looks like an E. If you just click on the button, if will Autosum, or add a group of cells together. You can also click on the drop-down arrow to choose other basic math operations. Instructions: To incorporate both health and math into this lesson, you will be tracking calories in a typical meal that you might eat at a fast food restaurant. You will track the calories, fat calories, non-fat calories, and the grand totals for each category. You will need to use the Internet to search for 3 fast food restaurants. Be sure to follow the guidelines below: GUIDELINES: 3) Decide on at least 3 fast food restaurants you would like to visit. Type in those restaurants’ web sites. 4) Be sure those fast food restaurants supply you with Fat Calories (Calories from Fat.). If they do not, you have to convert the Fat grams to calories which takes more time and effort. If you make that choice, you will need to go to the following site: http://www.convertunits.com/from/gram/to/calorie Here are a few examples if you have no idea where to start: McDonald's: http://nutrition.mcdonalds.com/getnutrition/nutritionfacts.pdf Burger King: http://www.bk.com/cms/en/us/cms_out/digital_assets/files/pages/Nutrition%20INFO- AUGUST%202013.pdf Wendy’s: http://www.wendys.com/en-us/nutrition-info Subway: http://www.subway.com/Nutrition/Files/CanNutritionValues.pdf Once you have decided on your restaurants and found the appropriate web sites, plan a meal for each with at least the following: · A Sandwich, salad or other main dish · A side dish (french fries, etc.) · A drink (be specific on sizes) · A dessert (if they don’t offer desserts, choose 2 sides) For each item on your menu, record the total calories and the calories from fat. Your charts in Excel should be modeled as follows: McDonald’s Calories Fat Non-Fat Calories calories Cheeseburger Small French Fry Small Coke Small Ice Cream Total 5) To create your tables, be sure to do the following: · Each table should have legible font and a reasonable font size · Each table should have a border · You should have a total of 4 columns and 7 rows (or 28 cells before you merge and center your title) · The name of the restaurant should be merged and centered across the top of your table. 6) Now enter your data into your tables. You will only be able to enter the Calories and Fat Calories from the websites. We will be using a formula to calculate the Non-fat calories and totals for each column. 7) Now you will add your calculation. Go to the last column in your table and choose the first “open” cell listed under Non-fat calories. 8) Then type the following = the calories cell address – the fat calories cell address 9) Example: =B3 – C3 10) Do this for each of the meal items for each of your restaurants. 11) Use the Summation button on your Home tab of your toolbar to add up the total for each column. McDonald’s Calories Fat Non-fat Calories Calories Double B3 C3 =B3 - C3 Cheeseburger Small French B4 C4 =B4 – C4 Fry Small Coke Small Ice Cream Cone Total 12) After you have all 3 restaurant tables calculated, add a graph for each individual table (so you should have a total of 3 graphs at the end. 13) DO NOT INCLUDE THE TOTALS LINE IN ANY OF YOUR GRAPHS!!!!! 14) Save as YourNameLastInitial_lesson3. Example: DarciM_Lesson3
